PLEASE NOTE: ACCESS TO THE BRIDGE OVER THE SMITE OVER HTE FLOOD BANK CAN BE VERY DIFFICULT IN WET WEATHER. THE ‘GRAB-ROPES’ EITHER SIDE OF THE PATH CANNOT BE RELIED ON.
LOCATION AND USAGE
Gate from Dark Lane, the path has now been fenced between the gate of Dark Lane as far as the bridge over the River Smite (Machin’s Bridge).
Leads to the ‘Machins’ bridge over the Smite to give access to FP 12 and to Church Street.
The path becomes overgrown and is difficult to negoiate in the growing season. In wet weather the bank leading to the bridge is also very difficult to access.
MAINTENANCE AND IMPROVEMENTS
October 2008 – A trough placed close to the footpath is flooding the footpath – The matter has been reported to the Rights of Way Officer.
March 2009 – the trough has now been removed and the footpath is no longer flooded.
July 2013, the Parish Council has started to maintain the segment between Dark Lane and Machin’s Bridge, although it is proving difficult due to the narrow width of the path.
Post June 2014 – Nottinghamshire County Council reported that they had added this path to their cutting schedule, although there is very little evidence of a regular ‘cut’. Additionally, NCC were to contact the Environment Agency to seek permission to ‘cut’ steps into the bank leading to the bridge, as of August 12th 2016 no progress is evident.
